01 / BRIEF

Every story starts with a “what if”.

I want to tell the story of the traveler, a man from our time who finds himself in Nikola Tesla’s laboratory in New
 York, in 1901.

 Tesla is alone, exhausted, and about to abandon his experiments. The traveler places a small electric motor from the
 future in front of him. Tesla watches it run: at last, he recognizes proof that his ideas can become reality.

 “I come from the future. Don’t give up. Your work will change the world. A century from now, a man named Elon will carry
 this dream forward with a company bearing your name.”

 Tesla asks, “Will they remember the name or the work?”
 The traveler replies, “Both.”

 Tesla takes a sheet of paper and writes:

 “The name is not a trophy.
 Don’t stop when they laugh.
 The work is not finished.”

 He signs it, then hands the letter to the traveler. “Then take this to him.”

 The traveler returns to our time and finds Elon in his workshop. He hands him the letter. “Nikola Tesla asked me to give
 you this message.”

 Elon reads in silence. The traveler hasn’t changed the past. He has given one man hope and carried his words to the man
 continuing his work.

When do we read the letter?

Two directions proposed in the session. One choice shapes the film.

Tesla watches the motor run first, then the Traveler speaks. We read the three lines up close as Tesla writes and signs. The same page crosses the century. The film ends on Elon's face as he reads silently, with the page turned away from us.

The Traveler speaks while the motor spins and Tesla's face turns from exhaustion to recognition. In 1901 we see the pen and the signature. The same page crosses the century. We read the three lines over Elon's shoulder, and the film ends on the page in his silent hands.
